Research Project: Genomic Selection is Looming: Building a Robust Genotype-to-Phenotype Platform to Revolutionize Public Cotton Breeding

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-020-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2022
End Date: Sep 30, 2025

Objective:
Initiate and test genome-assisted selection in the UGA cotton breeding programs and develop recommendations. The goal of this objective is to generate an initial genomic prediction model.

Approach:
1. Grow and maintain 10,000 F3 plants in the breeding nursery corresponding to around 100 individual crosses. 2. Select 1,500 plants by favorable plant type, and tag each plant with a barcode so they can be tracked through the experiment. 3. Phenotype plants for fiber quality and lint percent. 4. Provide collected leaf tissue for genotyping these plants. 5. In second and third year of the project, conduct field trials on selected F5 and F6 populations and collect agronomic and fiber quality data for use in prediction models. 6. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals, databases, and conferences.
