Location: Immunity and Disease Prevention Research
Project Number: 2032-51530-026-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 29, 2021
End Date: Sep 28, 2026
Objective:
The objective of this Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement (NACA) is to facilitate the joint conduct of human nutrition research studies at the USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Western Human Nutrition Research Center (WHNRC), located on the campus of the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). During the next 5 years the WHNRC will focus on research that investigates the impact of diet on macronutrient metabolism in the context of metabolic disease, and on the intestinal microbiome, gut health and immune function. Studies will include an intervention trail examining the effect of dietary fiber on the gut microbiome and response to vaccination, an observational study examining the effect of habitual low fiber intake on the microbiome and gut health, and an intervention trial examining the effect of a diet following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans on metabolic health.
Approach:
UC Davis will support clinical studies conducted in the WHNRC by employing and providing technical and medical personnel required for research on humans. These may include, but are not limited to, a Human Studies manager; research dietitians and metabolic kitchen personnel; personnel with specialized training in clinical procedures such as phlebotomy, body composition analysis, and exercise physiology; Clinical Nurses obtained from the UC Davis Medical Center, and recruiters or Clinical Research Coordinators with expertise in recruitment of volunteers. UC Davis Medical Center will analyze blood samples to screen subjects for eligibility as study participants.
