Objective:
Ensure all ARS projects involving the use of biological agents are conducted in accordance with all federal and applicable regulations, whereby the Cooperator's Institutional Biological Safety Committee (IBC) serves as the externally administered IBC of record for the Cattle Fever Tick Research Laboratory in Edinburg, Texas (satellite facility of the Knipling-Bushland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory in Kerrville, TX).

Approach:
ARS will utilize the UT-RGV’s Institutional Biological Safety Committee (IBC) as its committee of record for studies in which ARS does not have access to an ARS Institutional Biosafety Committee within 50 miles of the study location site. This will ensure compliance with the National Institutes of Health "Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules" (NIH Guidelines) and the safe conduct of research involving biohazards and/or recombinant technology.
