Research Project: Rapid Response to Coffee Leaf Rust

Location: Tropical Plant Genetic Resources and Disease Research

Project Number: 2040-21000-018-006-T
Project Type: Trust Fund Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2021
End Date: Mar 1, 2023

Objective:
In order to monitor and mitigate the impact of CLR on Hawaii Island and Maui and prevent or limit the spread to other islands growing coffee, the ecology and epidemiology of CLR will be investigated, CLR isolates will be genetically characterized to genotype and race, and tools for early detection and strategies for disease management will be developed and disseminated through research, education and outreach to growers and surveyors.

Approach:
Since CLR has recently emerged in Hawaii, our understanding of CLR in Hawaii is in its infancy. In order to limit the spread and severity of CLR caused by H. vastatrix, we will: Investigate the ecology and epidemiology of CLR (where is it?; incidence and severity); Develop methods for early detection (visual guides for identification; molecular techniques; spore trapping); and, Develop and deploy disease management techniques and strategies (eradication; suppression; hygiene).
