Research Project: Development of Methods to Detect Snails in Catfish Aquaculture Ponds

Location: Aquatic Animal Health Research

Project Number: 6010-32000-027-016-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2020
End Date: Sep 30, 2023

Objective:
This agreement is aimed toward the production of molecular assays to detect the presence of Marsh Ram’s Horn Snail (Planorbella trivolvis) and Ghost Ram’s Horn Snail (Biomphalaria havanensis) by sampling water from catfish ponds.

Approach:
1. Sequence the mitochondrial genomes of the Marsh Ram’s Horn Snail (Planorbella trivolvis) and Ghost Ram’s Horn Snail (Biomphalaria havanensis). 2. Use the mitochondrial genome sequence to design molecular assays (quantitative polymerase chain reaction and loop-mediated isothermal amplification to detect snail DNA in pond water.
