Research Project: Building Genomic Resources and Investigating Traits in Grass Species

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-005-48-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The project will focus on building genomic tools for grass species, which as important southeastern crops have limited tool resources, including genome assembly and annotation. Lab, greenhouse and field experiments will be performed, particularly focused on quality and disease resistance in order to obtain phenotypic information for identifying QTL and genomic regions associated with traits of interest. Identified genomic regions will be used to begin investigation of genomic regions identified by experiments, using additional samples in lab, greenhouse and/or field experiments.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for animal and crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Develop and utilize next-generation sequencing platforms to investigate biologically relevant questions in grasses. 2. Perform laboratory experiments and capture data such as RNA-seq and phenotyping for traits of interest. 3. Perform bioinformatic analyses to investigate population structures and relevance to trait information. 4. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
