Research Project: Coordinating Breeding Informatics to Benefit Specialty Crops

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2020
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Perform bioinformatics analyses, develop and implement bioinformatics software focused on improving breeding tools. Organize breeding community projects around development of bioinformatics platforms that are commodity specific for specialty crops, including but not limited to, sugarcane, blueberry, peanut and turf. Work on development of genomics based tools within commodity groups to set the stage for future genomic selection projects.

Approach:
Investigator and Cooperator will work together to enhance breeding tools and references for animal and crop systems to address the objective above: 1. Organize commodity groups to initiate development of ontology systems. 2. Advise on development of next-generation sequencing sets that will allow for future development of amplicon and/or other genotyping based platform for cost-effective genotyping. 3. Initiate and train collaborators in data management strategies for collecting field data systematically. 4. Utilize and develop systems for integrating historical breeding data into systematic collection systems, such as breedbase databases. 5. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals and databases.
