Research Project: UMES Stormwater Management Research Facility: Investigating Nutrient and Sediment Reduction for Poultry House Facilities

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 8070-13000-015-008-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2020
End Date: Apr 30, 2023

Objective:
To establish an agricultural stormwater management research and training site at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) where applied research will be conducted to investigate various stormwater and drainage approaches for poultry housing facilities and demonstrate the approaches together with the nutrient loss reduction to the adjacent landscape and waterways.

Approach:
Establish the UMES Stormwater Management Research and Training (SWMR) facility for use by faculty, staff, and students to provide hands-on poultry house stormwater drainage management education and training and applied research facilities. Evaluate nutrient reduction strategies and approaches that are suitable for stormwater drainage and infrastructures for poultry house systems without stormwater drainage systems.
