Research Project: Seed Quality and Germination Tests of Seeds Stored at NLGRP

Location: Agricultural Genetic Resources Preservation Research

Project Number: 3012-21000-017-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 1, 2020
End Date: Apr 30, 2025

Objective:
The objective of this research is to characterize seed quality and germination potential of National Laboratory for Genetic Resources Preservation (NLGRP) accessions that have been preserved for 10 or more years.

Approach:
ARS will identify seed accessions that were received by ARS 10 to 20 years ago and are now scheduled for monitor testing. Species will have testing rules outlined by Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) that require less than 21 days to complete and no prechill or clipping requirements. Tests will be conducted by Cooperator staff using AOSA rules and about 50 seeds. Data will be entered by Cooperator staff using a germination form created from the ‘Fulcrum’ app on iPads provided by ARS. ARS staff will summarize results and provide comparisons with initial germination results measured 10-20 years ago. Storage effects for different species will be tested.
