Research Project: Modifying Soluble Carbohydrates in Soybean Seed for Enhanced Nutritional Energy Meal

Location: Plant Genetics Research

Project Number: 5070-21000-040-038-R
Project Type: Reimbursable Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 1, 2019
End Date: Sep 30, 2020

Objective:
Determine the interaction of the HOLL seed oil trait with the low RFO meal trait for seed composition.

Approach:
Our project portion involves confirming the effect of the combination of the raffinose synthase 2 and new raffinose synthase 3 alleles on seed carbohydrate composition alone and in combination with the high oleic/low linolenic acid (HOLL) seed oil trait in addition to continued analyses of the interactions of the HOLL trait with other carbohydrate modifications. At least 100 pounds of near isogenic lines with contrasting seed composition traits will be produced for use in animal feeding trials to determine trait value. Seed carbohydrate phenotype of soybean germplasm with the HOLL seed oil trait and the new ultra-low RFO trait will be evaluated.
