Research Project: Cooperative Improvement for Improved Rust Resistance in Wheat-Univ of Georgia

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-22000-019-004-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2019
End Date: Sep 14, 2024

Objective:
Evaluate, identify, and develop sources of resistance to rust diseases in winter wheat.

Approach:
Cooperator will collaborate with ARS scientists to develop wheat germplasm with resistance to stripe rust, leaf rust, and stem rust. This will be accomplished by the cooperator by growing and evaluating lines from USDA-ARS Uniform Nurseries in a rust-conducive field environment in Georgia. Cooperator will also breed and develop lines having resistance to all three rust diseases, that are adapted to Georgia. Data and germplasm will be shared between ARS, University of Georgia, and other collaborating scientists.
