Research Project: Effects of Stress on Insect Pollinators and Pests

Location: Insect Genetics and Biochemistry Research

Project Number: 3060-21220-032-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2019
End Date: Jul 31, 2024

Objective:
The objectives for this research are to investigate the stress physiology of insect pollinators, including molecular characterization of stress responses, field performance of solitary bees that have undergone stressful thermal histories, and characterization of the metabolomic profile and respiratory physiology of stressed pollinators, with an emphasis on temperature stress.

Approach:
The USDA-ARS will provide research space and material support including alfalfa leafcutting bees for the project. The collaborator will provide expertise in insect stress physiology and in the area of insect metabolism, including the previous development of assays to monitor insect respiration.
