Research Project: Cooperative Improvement for Disease Resistance in Wheat

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-22000-019-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2019
End Date: Sep 14, 2024

Objective:
Evaluate, identify, and develop sources of resistance to diseases in winter wheat.

Approach:
Cooperator will collaborate with ARS scientists to develop wheat germplasm with resistance to stripe rust, leaf rust, stem rust, powdery mildew, glume blotch, and Fusarium head blight. This will be accomplished using speed breeding via double haploids. Identify new molecular markers for important disease resistance traits in winter wheat germplasm and evaluate the germplasm using the markers. Make new crosses, marker-assisted selection for key traits; conduct phenotyping, genotyping, and selection for improved wheats lines using GWAS (genome-wide association studies).
