Research Project: Acquisition of Ecological Measurements in the Central Mississippi River Basin LTAR Site

Objective:
1. Collect and analyze data from weather stations, flux towers, soil moisture and oxygen systems and greenhouse gas headspace samples. 2. Perform plant diversity sampling and community characterization of the Tucker Prairie flux tower footprint.

Approach:
For objective 1, equipment and procedures are generally well established. Advice will be provided as needed and maintenance and associated tasks for field instrumentation and dataloggers will be undertaken for several continuous and temporary measurement deployments, including a. weather station (field 1), b. ASP (Field 1), BAU (Field 3), and TP (Tucker Prairie) eddy covariance flux towers, c. weather station (South Farm), and d. Soil moisture and Oxygen systems (Fields 1 and 3) (LTAR denitrification experiment). e. Collect greenhouse gas headspace samples in exploratory experiment (South Farm) according to LTAR GRACENET protocols. For Objective 2, the protocols needed to characterize ecological diversity and plant aboveground biomass will be implemented in a similar manner to other LTAR sites, and using protocols appropriate to LTAR, amended as necessary in consultation with ARS. Exploratory protocols related to above-canopy seed dispersal will be implemented in the flux tower foot print. Based on discussion with other LTAR agricultural sites, ecological data will be collected at managed agricultural sites. Cooperator will advise on corresponding sampling protocols in flux tower footprints on managed agricultural sites known as ASP and BAU.
