Research Project: Advancing U.S. and Peru Relations Through Collaborative Genomics Research of Mutually Important Agricultural Crops

Location: Genomics and Bioinformatics Research

Project Number: 6066-21310-006-005-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2019
End Date: Dec 31, 2023

Objective:
Develop and investigate genomics of agricultural crops that are of mutual interest to the U.S. and Peru through collaborative efforts including, whole genome sequencing and other sequencing techniques in order to perform bioinformatics analysis and identification of Quantitative Trait Loci for traits of interest. Develop tools for breeders and geneticists that are applicable to agricultural improvement of species of interest. Bioinformatic analysis results, important loci and breeders tools are expected to be additional objectives of this project. Additional benefits include better working relationships between countries and improved access to species of mutual interest.

Approach:
The investigator and Cooperator will collaborate to develop and enhance training and development of breeding tools and references for plants of mutual interest to address the objective above: 1. Develop, train, and utilize deep sequencing platforms to investigate agronomically important traits. 2. Develop analyses for identification of genes responsible for quantitative trait loci. 3. Develop and optimize variant discovery software for variant discovery. 4. Perform bioinformatic analyses to investigate whole genome sequencing available on large numbers of lines. 5. Train and foster collaboration of next generation of U.S. and Peru agricultural scientists. 6. Publication and dissemination of research products to reference journals, databases, and conferences.
