Research Project: Genetic Approaches of Improving Crop Nutritional Quality Traits

Location: Plant, Soil and Nutrition Research

Project Number: 8062-21000-050-005-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 16, 2019
End Date: Jan 31, 2024

Objective:
The objectives of this cooperative research are: 1) to clone a gene that suppresses carotenoid accumulation in melon fruit; 2) to functionally characterize it and elucidate its regulatory mechanism; and 3) to identify additional new genes in mediating carotenoid accumulation.

Approach:
The approaches include to: use next generation sequencing, molecular, biochemical, and genetic tools for gene isolation, functional study, and to use traditional breeding and genetic approaches for developing nutritional quality trait enhanced crops.
