Location: Crop Production Systems Research
Project Number: 6066-22000-081-005-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jan 2, 2017
End Date: Dec 31, 2021
Objective:
The objective of this research is to conduct aerial imaging in connection with image analysis of satellite imagery for plant feature mapping over aricultural and forest lands.
Approach:
The research will be conducted jointly by USDA-ARS scientists at Stoneville, Mississippi, and a scientist at the University of Arkansas - Monticello. The collaboration will involve acquiring aerial and satellite imagery of crop and forest lands to develop innovative methods of plant feature mapping and to quantify the dynamics of land-cover change. The collaborative project will cover the following aspects: a) acquire images of crop and forest lands from airborne and space-borne platforms, b) develop appropriate methods of plant feature extraction, c) determine land-cover changes based on the extracted features; d) validate and evaluate the developed methods, and e) publish the developed methods and application results. Imagery will be collected at experimental sites in Arkansas and Mississippi. ARS scientists will obtain the airborne imagery; collaborating scienstist will supply the satellite imagery. Image processing will be conducted at both locations. Research findings will be shared by the two parties, and delivered as Science Citation Index (SCI) peer reviewed journal publications with mutual authorship.
