Research Project: Development of Apple Rootstock Technologies for U.S. and Brazilian Apple Growers

Location: Plant Genetic Resources Unit (PGRU)

Project Number: 8060-21000-029-001-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2015
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
Both parties believe that interactions between the two parties, will enhance the development of new rootstocks with improved performance relating to productivity, disease resistance and nutrient uptake.

Approach:
To this end the parties wish to enhance collaboration in the following areas: a) Exchange of information, data and procedures on relevant technologies, scientific results and capacities relating the performance, propagation of apple rootstocks being developed in Geneva, NY. Research in Brazil on aluminum toxicity, nutrient uptake, soil fertility relating to the performance of apple rootstocks. Research on replant tolerance. b) Capacity building/training on specific needs related to mutual areas of interest. Both parties will organize and participate in field days/seminars that enhance implementation of findings in U.S. and Brazilian orchards. c) Exchange of experts and students for research cooperation on specific projects identified to be of mutual interest. d) Evaluation of temperate fruit cultivars and rootstocks originating from USDA breeding and germplasm repositories in Brazilian growing conditions with mutual interest program.
