Dr. Jeffrey T. Baker is a Plant Physiologist and Lead Scientist in the Wind Erosion and Water Conservation Research Unit, Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, Lubbock and Big Spring, TX. Objectives under NP 211 are to evaluate deficit irrigation strategies by quantifying the degree of crop drought stress in terms of individual leaf and whole canopy gas exchanges including transpiration and assimilation rate (e.g., canopy net photosynthesis). Efficient use of limited water resources in semi-arid regions is currently hindered by a lack of basic, canopy-scale, real-time knowledge of crop responses to water deficit. Resolving this involves development and utilization of the state-of-the-art Canopy EvapoTranspiration and Assimilation (CETA) chambers for quantifying crop water use and water use efficiency. These chambers are open systems that are deployed in the field for extended periods. Because these chambers now have the capability to very tightly control atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration (CO2, a greenhouse gas and a major plant fertilizer) these chambers are uniquely poised to engage major research issues concerning Climate Change and Agriculture in the US.
