Educational background

PhD  Farm Animal Behavior & Welfare – University of Cambridge, UK

BSc (Hons) Biochemistry – University of Bristol, UK

Registered Animal Scientist

Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology

Originally from the United Kingdom, I have been with the Livestock Behavior Research Unit since 2001. I have been researching the welfare and behavior of pigs and dairy cattle since 1990, working in the UK (11 years) and the US (22 years), with research stays in Denmark and Canada. My current major research interests include social and maternal behavior of sows, the manipulation of pig behavior by diet, factors influencing piglet mortality and environmental enrichment in intensive pig production. I also have a major interest in the development of novel indicators of animal welfare, and I actively engage in inter-disciplinary studies allied to the concept of One Health and One Welfare.  I am the author/editor of 4 books and 260 refereed articles and abstracts on farm animal welfare. I was the inaugural Specialty Chief Editor for the Animal Behavior & Welfare section of Frontiers in Veterinary Science and a Past President of the International Society for Applied Ethology. I am active in supporting animal welfare science and scientists in less developed countries.
