Kathy Anderson rides a "mean" plow horse

Kathy Anderson riding a plow horse

Young cousin Kathy Anderson wanted a ride, and Glen Anderson, age 16, obliges.  The white plow horse, Doc, while obedient and hard-working when in harness, was "mean" when unharnessed.  If you were trying to saddle him near a building he would step sideways to try to pin you against the wall. The other horse was named Charlie.  The photo was taken about 1948 in Raleigh County, West Virginia, on the Jesse and Janet Anderson homestead. Jesse Anderson's great-grandfather, Aaron Redden, was the first owner of the farm, which originally consisted of 3000 acres.  Parts of it were sold, sometimes for as little as 5 cents per acre, to pay taxes.
