Interpretive Summary: Vanguard Russet is a russeted potato cultivar with white flesh, and blocky, oblong tubers. Scientists at the USDA-ARS laboratory in Aberdeen, ID and Prosser, WA in collaboration with researchers at Texas A&M University, Colorado State University, University of California, University of Idaho, Oregon State University, Washington State University, and Michigan State University evaluated the performance of this cultivar at twelve locations in seven states between 2013-2020. Total tuber yield, percent U.S. No. 1, solids content, tuber number per plant, tuber weight, plant vigor, and maturity are similar to Russet Norkotah, a widely grown, early maturing table stock cultivar. Vanguard Russet exhibited fewer internal and external defects than Russet Norkotah and superior dormancy during storage. It also exhibits resistance to common scab and Fusarium dry rot. Vanguard Russet is an excellent cultivar option for fresh market potato production due to its high marketable yields, excellent external and internal tuber appearance, and long dormancy.

Technical Abstract: Vanguard Russet (TX08352-5Ru) is a medium maturing potato cultivar released by Texas A&M AgriLife Research in 2018. Vanguard Russet produces attractive tubers with a blocky shape and uniform size and is ideally suited for the fresh market. Vanguard Russet produces oblong to long tubers with medium russet skin and white flesh. It produces a high yield of marketable tubers, with many tubers in the 170 to 510 g size category, some oversized tubers, and fewer culls than Russet Norkotah. Vanguard Russet has low external tuber defects (growth cracks, second growth), internal tuber defects (hollow heart, internal brown spot, vascular.
