Interpretive Summary: Graduate degrees in ecology provide a wide range of job opportunities, yet many graduate advisors continue to promote careers as university professors. This article provides an introduction to a new series in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment that highlights the diverse career paths now available to ecologists. It also highlights the relevant knowledge, experience and skills that can help to align students’ career goals with emerging career opportunities.
Technical Abstract: This article provides an the introduction to a series describing non-academic careers in ecology. The world offers many niches for ecologists and the myriad and complex environmental challenges facing us continue to create new career opportunities. Historically, graduate students have interacted closely with ecologists who, at some level, often believe that the choice they made to pursue a career in academia is the one that would also be best for their students. However, while demand for ecologists outside of academia is increasing, the number of academic positions available is far below the number of individuals interested in these positions. The series, for which this article provides an introduction, will explore in depth, and from a number of different perspectives, opportunities for developing pathway wide variety exciting careers in ecology . Our ultimate focus will be to highlight the relevant knowledge, experience and skills that can help to align students’ career goals with emerging career opportunities.
