Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter is an update on the swine Immune System. It will be Chapter 16 in the 11th Edition (2018) of Diseases of Swine. The chapter outlines all aspects of the swine immune system in development and in responses to infection and vaccination. It illustrates the tremendous influence that the immune system exerts on pig development and health. It describes the complex interactions between the pig, its genetics and microbiome, and the environment, and how they determine the effectiveness of the immune response for pig health, disease and vaccine responses.
