Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: ‘Blueray’ tissue was mechanically inoculated onto Chenopodium quinoa indicator plants as part of a study to determine virus presence in blueberries at Iwate University, Japan. Plants developed chlorosis indicative of virus presence and after virus purification and genome characterization it was determined that a new virus, named blueberry spherical latent virus (BSLV) infects blueberry. As implied by its name BLSV does not cause visual symptoms in ‘Berkeley’, ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Bluejay’, ‘Collins’, ‘Coville’, ‘Herbert’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Pemberton’, and ‘Rubel’. BSLV is a member of the Sequiviridae family and most closely related to peach rosette mosaic virus, a member of subgroup C of the genus Nepovirus. An RT-PCR detection assay has been developed and used to determine the presence of the virus in field grown plants as part of the study that yielded the discovery of BSLV. Although the virus is symptomless in single infections, it in unknown whether it acts synergistically with other viruses to cause disease.
