Interpretive Summary: The snout moths are represented worldwide and include many species that cause millions of dollars in damage to economically important crops and stored products. In this paper we validate five scientific names that were described in a dissertation, clarify the identity, nomenclatural status, and distribution in the U.S. The results will be of interest to biodiversity researchers and quarantine personnel at ports-of-entry in the U.S. and Canada.

Technical Abstract: The dissertation entitled “Revision of the Chrysauginae of North America” included new taxa that were never published and do not meet the requirements for availability by the International Code of Nomenclature. Therefore, the following taxa from this dissertation are described and illustrated: Arta brevivalvalis Cashatt, sp. n., Heliades lindae Cashatt, sp. n., Paragalasa Cashatt, gen. n., Paragalasa exospinalis Cashatt, sp. n., Penthesilea sacculalis baboquivariensis Cashatt, subsp. n. Keys to species of Arta and Heliades of North America are reproduced. Other taxonomic actions are summarized, and adult holotypes and associated labels, and genitalia of paratypes are newly illustrated.
