Interpretive Summary: Records are presented concerning the origin and characteristics of five new pecan cultivars: 'Apalachee', 'Byrd', 'INTA Delta I', 'INTA Delta II' and 'Mandan'. A "cultivar" is a cultivated variety of a plant. In the pecan industry, cultivars are propagated by grafting. Records of the origin and characteristics of pecan cultivars help nurserymen and scientists identify and propagate appropriate trees for their areas. 'Apalachee' is the result of a controlled cross between 'Moore' and 'Schley' produced by the USDA-ARS Pecan Breeding program. It has high nut quality, excellent disease resistance and high yield potential. 'Byrd' is a patented pecan cultivar with high nut quality and early nut maturity produced by the University of Georgia. This report gives parentage of 'Byrd' as 'Wichita' x 'Pawnee', based on molecular genetic analysis at the USDA ARS Pecan Breeding program. 'INTA Delta I' and 'INTA Delta II' are significant as the first pecan cultivars to be registered out of the Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia Agropecuaria (INTA), Delta del Parana, Argentina. 'Mandan' is the result of a controlled cross between 'BW-1' and 'Osage' produced by the USDA ARS Pecan Breeding program. It is an early maturing pecan cultivar with excellent yield potential, high nut quality and good scab resistance. Pecan cultivars are described on the basis of their origin, nut shape, nut size, percentage kernel, patterns of bloom (when known), and patterns of tree performance.
Technical Abstract: This document provides information for five pecan cultivars, 'Apalachee', ‘Byrd’, ‘INTA Delta I”, INTA Delta II’ and ‘Mandan’. For each entry, history of origin is presented chronologically, with brief but important details concerning dates, locations and individuals responsible. Nut characters are described using standard descriptors of nut shape and quality. Patterns of phenology and performance are provided, as known.
