Interpretive Summary: The paper describes a new species of bacteria that was isolated from a soil from a tropical environment. The organism may process unique or unusual properties that may have importance in the bioremediation or bio-energy industry. Studies with its DNA and cellular fatty acids show that it is an Enterobacter species that has not been previously described. Microscopic, biochemical and culture studies are consistent with this classification. The name Enterobacter soli is proposed for these bacteria.
Technical Abstract: A Gram-negative bacterium that formed cream colored colonies designated strain LF7 was isolated from soil collected in the Tambopata National Reserve in Madre de Dios, Peru. 16S rRNA sequence comparisons indicate that LF7 is a novel Enterobacter sp. closely related to E. asburiae AB004744T and E. aerogenes AB004750T based on its sequence homologies (98.7% and 98.5%, respectively). DNA G + C content was 52.8 mol% which is similar to that of E. asburiae (55-57 mol%), but significantly higher than that of E. faecalis V583 (37 mol%). The major cellular fatty acids present in the LF7 strain were C16:0 (27.3%), C16:1 '7c / C16:1 '6c (16.25%), C18:1 '7c (16.06%), C17:0 cyclo (12.37%), C14:0 3-OH / C16:1 iso I (8.92%), C14:0 (7.63%), C12:0 (3.85%), C17:0 (2.42%), C13:0 3-OH / C15:1 iso H (1.66%), C13:0 (1.13%), and C18:2 '6,9c / C18:0 ante (0.53%). The cellular fatty acid profile, GC content, phenotypic and biochemical characteristics were consistent with its placement. The name Enterobacter soli is proposed for these bacteria.
