Registration of Endeavor barley. Journal of Plant Registrations. 3:124-126. Interpretive Summary: Barley is an important crop to producers in the Intermountain west area of the US, and specifically Idaho. The acreage devoted to barley has remained steady, and recent increases in price should result in an increase in barley acreage in Idaho and Montana. The release of Endeavor will provide producers with a variety with a good malt profile and improved yield potential compared to Charles. Endeavor was evaluated in replicated yield trials for agronomics across multiple environments and years in Idaho, Kansas, Oregon, and Washington. This data shows that it has superior yield potential compared to Charles, and also had higher levels of malting enzymes. Endeavor is expected to be adapted to both irrigated and dry land regions of Idaho and Washington. D.E.Obert, C.P. Evans, D.M. Wesenberg (Retired), and E.W. No. ______PI 654824); a two-rowed winter malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was developed and submitted for release in 2007 by the Agricultural Research Service-USDA, Aberdeen, ID, in cooperation with the University of Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station. Endeavor is a selection from the cross ORWM8406/’Harrington’. ORWM8406 has the pedigree ‘Carstens’/‘Riso’ mutant 1508 (F1)//‘Cossack’. Riso mutant 1508 is an ethylene-imine induced mutant of ‘Bomi’. Progenitors of ORWM8406 are all European barleys. Harrington is a two-rowed spring malting barley released by the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, and is the current western two-rowed malting industry standard. Endeavor was released due to its higher diastatic power compared to ‘Charles’, the most advanced two-rowed winter malting barley adapted to Idaho. |
