Interpretive Summary: One of the objectives of the potato breeding and genetics program at Aberdeen, Idaho is the development of potato cultivars suitable for Western chip growers and processors. Examples of the success of the program in the development of chipping cultivars include the release of Gemchip in 1989 and Chipeta in 1993. Each year, cold chipping and sweetening resistant selections are intercrossed with each other and with other non-cold chipping potato cultivars. The resulting progeny are evaluated in the field for suitable agronomic traits; promising clones are selected and subsequently tested for their ability to resist the accumulation of reducing sugars following storage at 40o F and 45o F.
