Buchananiella continua (white) from California, an anthocoridae new to the United States with new synonymy (Hemiptera: Heteroptera). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. 103:558-560. Interpretive Summary: A species of predatory bug in the Family Anthocoridae not known to occur in the United States was collected from acacia trees and ornamental shrubs in central and southern California. The species, Buchananiella continua (White), was originally described from the island of Madeira in 1879. A species described by Blatchley as Cardiastethus cavicollis, collected in southern California in 1934, is shown to be identical to B. continua. Technical Abstract: Buchananiella continua (White) is reported for the first time in the United States. Originally described from the island of Madeira, it now has been reported from many widely separated localities around the world. The California specimens were taken from plant litter, and from shrubs infested with psocids and mites. In Southern California, they were taken from a hedge infested with whitefly and mites. This is a predaceous species of Anthocoridae. Cardiastethus cavicollis, described by Blatchley from Southern California in 1934, was determined to be a synonym of B. continua. |
