Research Project: Generating porcine reproductive and respiratory virus (PRRSV)infectious clones for investigating genomic regions contributing to viral pathogenicity

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-230-087-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2026
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
Investigate the pathogenesis of emerging porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome viruses focusing on viral determinants affecting replication and host immunomodulation.

Approach:
Infectious clones for emerging strains of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) will be constructed. Regions between more pathogenic and less pathogenic strains may be swapped to discern genomic regions contributing to virulence. The pathogenicity of these recombinant viruses will be evaluated in vitro and some may be chosen to evaluate in vivo at ARS.
