Research Project: Developing an organoid co-culture model for investigating epithelial-immune interactions underlying enteric coronavirus infections in swine

Location: Virus and Prion Research

Project Number: 5030-32000-230-086-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2026
End Date: Jul 31, 2028

Objective:
Reduce reliance on live animal experiments by developing an organoid co-culture model for investigating host-pathogen interactions underlying enteric coronavirus infections in swine.

Approach:
Organoid experts will develop a co-culture system model to evaluate interactions of epithelial cells and immune cells in preventing or facilitating coronavirus infections in swine. The model will be utilized to identify potential modulation strategies that can then be further evaluated in live animal studies, such as vaccines or dietary additives.
