Objective:
The goal of this experiment is to understand the concentration and chemical composition of particulate matter of 10 µm or less (PM-10) and atmospheric gases emitted from livestock operations involving cattle. In addition, how housing cattle in different locations that are housed in open lots versus open-fronted barns impacts air quality will be determined.

Approach:
Sampling for particulate matter will be carried out with PQ200 particulate matter samplers. The particulate matter samples will be collected outside the fence-line of open lot and open-fronted barn at the same time. Collection of NO2, SO2, and ammonia gases will also be conducted at these times with OGAWA passive samplers placed. Each sample will take 24 hours to collect and samples will be collected at multiple locations within and apart from the facility. Samples will be collected in the summer of 2021 and may be repeated during the summer of 2022 and 2023. After the samples are taken, they will be placed in a freezer for storage before transport back to the College(s) for analytical analysis.
