Research Project: Harnessing Genetic Diversity through Genomic Prediction in the USDA Pea Germplasm Collection

Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing Research

Project Number: 2090-21000-037-003-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2020
End Date: Jun 30, 2023

Objective:
To increase seed protein concentration in yellow pea cultivars by looking for useful genetic variation using genomic selection, particularly for germplasm enhancement that can potentially sustain long-term genetic gain in breeding programs.

Approach:
a) Establishing a reference set. This project will construct a training set of entries for testing and optimizing genomic prediction models using machine learning. b) Assessing prediction accuracy from different methods by cross-validation. Many questions surrounding the implementation of genomic selection need to be answered so it is used most effectively.
