Research Project: Assessing Multi-Functional Soil and Water Management Strategies in Artificially Drained Croplands

Location: Soil Drainage Research

Project Number: 5080-13210-003-041-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2025
End Date: Sep 14, 2028

Objective:
The objective is to investigate and understand the impacts of different soil management (fertility, tillage, cropping rotation), and water management (drainage water retention, storage, recycling, treatment) practices on nutrient and water use efficiency, soil quality, and crop production in artificially drained corn and soybean production systems.

Approach:
The cooperator will maintain, collect and process soil and water data from select sites within an ARS- established edge-of-field network and use hydrologic models to predict outcomes from different individual and/or stacked water and soil crop production management practices.
