Research Project: Plant Exploration in the Southeast USA and Puerto Rico to Collect Magnolia

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-011-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 1, 2025
End Date: Dec 31, 2026

Objective:
Obtain germplasm of wild, native species of Magnolia in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Puerto Rico. Species to be collected include Magnolia pyramidata, M. splendens, and M. portoricensis. Germplasm will be deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). Document populations of the species from which germplasm is collected, including complete passport data. Work closely with USDA ARS curators to ensure that collection protocol meets standards of the NPGS.

Approach:
Germplasm of native Magnolia will be collected from wild populations in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Puerto Rico. Cooperator will work with USDA ARS colleagues in Puerto Rico and at the US National Arboretum to locate and collect seeds and cuttings from various sites. Collections will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Seeds and cuttings will be sent to the appropriate sites of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
