Research Project: Developing Remote Sensing Metrics of Ecosystem Health for Grazing Management

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-096-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 15, 2025
End Date: Jul 31, 2026

Objective:
The researcher will enhance the ability of the existing evapotranspiration (ET), leaf area index (LAI), and crop phenology software tools for rangeland monitoring in three hubs located in Michigan, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. Objectives will include both retrospective product validation and real-time generation of remotely sensed ET, LAI, and phenology, and using the remote sensing metrics to assess ecosystem health and responses to grazing management.

Approach:
The researcher will conduct the following tasks to achieve the objectives: organize existing ET and LAI time series at three sites; generate recent ET and LAI data and share with the rangeland research team; assess and document ET and LAI responses to the rangeland management for the three hubs; prepare manuscript on the findings.
