Research Project: Plant Exploration in Minnesota to Collect Native Honeysuckle

Location: National Germplasm Resources Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-21000-302-010-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 1, 2025
End Date: Sep 30, 2026

Objective:
1) Obtain germplasm of wild, native species of Lonicera in Minnesota (including L. canadensis, L. dioica, L. hirsuta, L. oblongifolia, L. reticulata, and L. caerulea var. villosa) to be deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). 2) Document populations of the species from which germplasm is collected, including complete passport data. 3) Work closely with USDA ARS curators to ensure that collection protocol meets standards of the NPGS. 4) Complete a detailed trip report to be submitted with the collected germplasm.

Approach:
Germplasm of native Lonicera (honeysuckle) will be collected from wild populations in Minnesota. Germplasm will be collected in the form of seeds and will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. Seed will be sent to the appropriate sites of the USDA National Plant Germplasm System. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
