Research Project: Conservation Practices Impact On Nutrient Loss In The Lower Mississippi River Basin

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-100-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 15, 2026
End Date: Aug 31, 2027

Objective:
1. Develop an improved understanding of nutrient and sediment transport, transformations and the hydrology in an irrigated landscape. 2. Validate model simulations of nutrients and sediment transport in irrigated agricultural land in the Little River Ditches (08020204) and Cache (08020302) basin using both edge-of-field and in-stream monitoring data. 3. Analyze the effects of existing and emerging conservation practices in crops unique to this region and under irrigated water management conditions.

Approach:
Water quality metrics including nutrients-nitrate, nitrite, and orthophosphate- and sediment will be measured from runoff water samples. Samples will be collected using field-rugged sampling equipment and manually analyzed in the laboratory with a collaborating laboratory. Results from hand samples will be compared and contrasted to measurements using water quality sondes.
