Research Project: Improving Our Understanding of the Impact of Management on Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Major Mid-South Crops-Jonesboro-Univ. of California/Davis

Location: Delta Water Management Research

Project Number: 6024-13000-004-083-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 1, 2024
End Date: Feb 28, 2029

Objective:
Contribute to the Inflation Reduction Act Measurement Monitoring Reporting and Verification Action Area 2-Cropland through measurement of cropland methane and nitrous oxide emissions.

Approach:
The collaborator at UC-Davis will work with farmers to determine the effectiveness of midseason drain (MSD) with static vented chamber (SVC) measurements. GHG emissions will be measured weekly and every 2-3 days during the MSD treatment period and compared to farmer practice and replicated four times. A second study will compare dry-seeding (DS) to water seeding (WS) (a typical California practice). Research at the experiment station has shown roughly a 50% reduction in CH4 emissions with DS compared to WS. This experiment will expand the research to farmer fields and pair DS with WS on sites with similar soil types, winter management practices, variety, and planting dates. SVC will be used to measure GHG emissions at least once a week and more often during soil moisture fluctuation. A third experiment will focus on the impacts of residue management during the winter preceding a rice crop at the study sites described in experiment one and two. For all experiments, soil moisture, grain yield, field management, soil type, historical management, soil, water and air temperature, flood water height will be measured at the study sites.
