The overall objective of this research to determine the influence of nonequilibrium processes on the fate of colloid and colloid-associated contaminants during Managed Aquifer Recharge.
The long-term risks of groundwater contamination at managed aquifer recharge (MAR) sites can be strongly influenced for physical (e.g., preferential flow and exchange between fast and slow flow domains) and chemical (e.g., kinetic retention and release) nonequilibrium processes, but their impact is not fully understood or quantified. Field, laboratory, and mathematical modeling studies will be initiated to better understand and quantify the role of nonequilibrium processes on the fate of contaminants during MAR. Specific contaminants of concern include colloid (microorganisms, dissolved organic matter, clays, and metal oxides) and colloid associated contaminants (e.g., arsenic, nutrients, and organics).
