Research Project: App Validation for Water and Salinity Management of Arizona Farms

Location: Water Management and Conservation Research

Project Number: 2020-13660-009-008-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Validate a prototype smartphone application (app) that uses weather and satellite remote sensing data to guide irrigation decision support for irrigated farms in Arizona. Users of the app will be individual farmers, irrigation advisors, and water management agencies. The app is an easy-to-use tool to guide irrigations by suggesting ways to optimize water use and minimize salinity concentrations in shallow soils. The tool is developed for Arizona farms and needs to be validated against actual water use data sets.

Approach:
USDA will provide the theoretical knowledge and algorithms to modify the app. University of Arizona will revise and update the app software. USDA and University team members will jointly collaborate in the development by conducting weekly meetings, assessing progress, implementing updates, and testing the app.
