Research Project: Surveillance and Analysis of Stem Rust on Hybrid and Parental Barberries

Location: Cereal Disease Lab

Project Number: 5062-21220-025-021-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2022
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
Investigate the roles of the alternate hosts in pathogen variations and disease epidemiology of the stem rust pathogen. Specific objectives are: 1) monitor rust development on hybrid barberry and determine rust species if infections occurred; 2) test potential hybrid barberries for rust susceptibility; 3) characterize rust isolates through genotypic and phenotypic analyses; and 4) characterizing stem rust reactions of oat breeding germplasm and identifying new sources of stem rust resistance.

Approach:
Approach to the project will be: 1) Conduct field surveys to locate native and naturalized barberry (Berberis spp.) plants and collect rusts and plants; 2) Determine stem rust susceptibility of the putative hybrid barberry plants by inoculation experiments; 3) Derive rust isolates from infected barberry; and 4) Characterize isolates through genotypic and phenotypic analyses.
