Objective:
1) Survey to discover native natural enemies (parasitoids) of Asian longhorned beetle in South Korea.
2) Import natural enemies to the U.S. for quarantine evaluation of their potential to control Asian longhorned beetle.
Approach:
Field surveys for native parasitoids of Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) in South Korea will be conducted from May to September each year using two different methods: (1) direct collections of parasitized host eggs or larvae by removing hosts from naturally infested trees; and (2) using sentinel logs infested with ALB eggs (and adult beetles) or young larvae to attract the parasitoids in the field. All collected material will be returned to the laboratory and held until emergence of any natural enemies. Cooperator will assist ARS PI when traveling in South Korea to locate suitable field sites, prepare collecting cages and sentinel logs, and engage in field collections to obtain live material for export to the US. All collected parasitoids will be preferably hand carried or shipped by courier or air freight to the ARS quarantine facility at Newark, DE. All dead wasps will be reserved for identification.
