Research Project: Identifying and Managing Soilborne Pathogens in High Tunnel Vegetable Production

Location: Application Technology Research

Project Number: 5082-21000-001-044-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2024

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to survey for soilborne pathogens that threaten the sustainability of high tunnel vegetable production in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia and to disseminate the use of anaerobic soil disinfestation.

Approach:
High tunnels in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia will be visited and soils will be collected. Soils will be assessed using bioassays and PCR for various soilborne pathogens of concern to vegetable production. Trials to evaluate and disseminate results of published methodology for anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) will be initiated with grower collaborators.
