Research Project: Measuring Ozone Fluxes with Eddy Covariance

Location: Global Change and Photosynthesis Research

Project Number: 5012-21000-032-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 20, 2021
End Date: Sep 19, 2026

Objective:
The objective of this research is to monitor ozone fluxes over crop fields using a rapid ozone monitoring system, developed by collaborators.

Approach:
The approach is to build and install a modified in-situ instrument capable of measuring rapid fluxes of ozone (O3) in the troposphere. The instrument uses cavity-enhanced absorption to measure the amount of ozone in a sampled volume flowing through an optical cell, and will be used to measure O3 fluxes (the exchange between the Earth's surface and atmosphere) using the eddy covariance technique. The system will be installed on existing towers in Urbana that are currently measuring CO2 and H2O fluxes over crop systems.
