Research Project: Improving, Evaluating and Extending High Resolution Cropland Carbon Monitoring System (CCMS)

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-13610-030-021-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 1, 2021
End Date: Aug 31, 2022

Objective:
This proposal will perform improve nitrogen and N2O flux modeling which currently incorporates soil moisture model estimates, by incorporating remotely sensed soil moisture estimates. University of Maryland will be leading the effort as experts in modeling of nitrogen and N2O flux.

Approach:
The first step in this study is to review and evaluate the current state of carbon modeling using current soil moisture estimates along with tillage estimation. Then remotely sensed products will be introduced into the workflow for the model and evaluations of the performance will be made. University of Maryland will be leading the analysis and model development. ARS will be providing consultation on soil moisture monitoring and evaluation in agricultural systems.
