Research Project: Development of Genomic and Population

Location: Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Project Number: 8042-22000-317-009-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: May 24, 2021
End Date: May 31, 2024

Objective:
The objective of the ARS investigator is to collect potato aphids and sequence the genome. The objective of the cooperator is to collect potato aphids and perform a population genomics study.

Approach:
The ARS investigator will collect genomic grade potato tissues. These tissues will be used to extract high molecular weight DNA and ultimately sent to a sequencing facility to sequence the potato aphid genome. The genome will be annotated using sequenced RNA. All computational analyses will be performed on the USDA high performance computing cluster. The Cooperator will collect potato aphids from throughout the Pacific Northwest to perform a population genomic study. The DNA of the aphids collected aphids will be extracted, cut with enzymes, and sent to a sequencing center for genomic sequencing. The analyses will be performed on the Washington State University high performance cluster.
