Research Project: Breeding Corn to Enable Organic Seed Production - Illinois

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 5030-21000-073-019-A
Project Type: Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2021
End Date: Jul 31, 2025

Objective:
Our objective is to implement genomic selection in a rapid cycling breeding program and in development of triple cross hybrids that are well suited to organic seed production.

Approach:
Maize plants in the rapid cycling breeding program and the triple cross hybrid breeding program will be genotyped and this information will be used to estimate breeding values of these individuals. Superior individuals will be recombined to complete the breeding cycle. The breeding programs will be simulated to determine optimal program parameters.
